80-Year-Old Mom Becomes a Lifesaver for Her Son with a Kidney Donation
By Dr. Ankur Arya, Urologist and Renal Transplant Specialist, BLK Max Hospital
In a heart-touching story that reminds us of the limitless love a mother holds for her child, 80-year-old Darshana Jain became a real-life hero when she donated her kidney to her 59-year-old son, Rajesh. The transplant took place at BLK MAX Hospital, and I had the privilege and honor of performing this life-saving surgery.
This story is not just about a successful kidney transplant—it’s about courage, hope, and the power of a mother’s love that knows no boundaries, not even age.
Rajesh had been battling chronic kidney disease for some time. His kidneys were functioning poorly, and his health had started to decline. He was feeling weak, tired, and unable to live a normal life. Dialysis was keeping him alive, but it was not a permanent solution. The only way he could return to a healthy life was through a kidney transplant.
Like many patients, the first step was to find a matching donor. The family started looking among relatives and friends, but finding a suitable match was not easy. That’s when his mother, Darshana Jain, stepped forward and said something that stunned everyone: "Take my kidney. I want to save my son."
At first, the family hesitated. Darshana ji was 80 years old. They were concerned about her age and whether her body could handle such a major operation. But she was determined. She insisted that nothing was more important than saving her son’s life.
We at BLK MAX Hospital conducted a full medical evaluation to check if she was fit for the donation. Surprisingly, her overall health was excellent. Her heart, lungs, and other vital systems were functioning well, and she had no major illnesses. After thorough tests and counseling, she was declared a suitable donor.
As a surgeon, I have seen many emotional moments, but this was truly special. An 80-year-old mother offering a part of her body to give her son a second chance at life—it was deeply moving.
The transplant surgery was complex, given her age, but our skilled team of doctors, nurses, and support staff worked with extreme care and precision. I performed the transplant surgery myself, and I am proud to say that both mother and son did wonderfully well.
Post-surgery, Darshana ji recovered quickly. She remained strong and cheerful throughout the process. Rajesh’s body accepted the new kidney well, and within days, he began to feel healthier and more energetic. His creatinine levels dropped, and he no longer needed dialysis.
Today, Rajesh is back home, living a much-improved life, all thanks to the unmatched love and courage of his mother.
This story reminds us that age is just a number when it comes to love, especially a mother’s love. Darshana Jain broke all stereotypes and became a symbol of strength, proving that even at 80, one can give the gift of life.
I feel humbled to have been part of this incredible journey. At BLK MAX Hospital, we strive to provide the best care possible, and stories like these inspire us to continue our mission with even more passion and dedication.
To all families out there facing similar challenges—never lose hope. Miracles happen every day, sometimes in the most unexpected ways.
